Sri Lanka is a tropical island, ideally suitable for beach holidays. Deep blue seas and sandy shores for long walks to get your feet dig in the sand, while you get your sun tan bodies sipping a king coconut plucked just off the tree.

The southern coast is among Sri Lanka’s most visited places because of its beaches, old town charm, Buddhist shrines, temples and not to forget its beach hotels, resorts, villas, budget stays and local and international restaurants, bars, cafés etc.

Some of the best cities we have Downsouth are Bentota, Hikkaduwa, Galle and Unawatuna etc.

Bentota

The Bentota beach is located 62 km away from Colombo and abounds five star hotels, resorts, villas and budget stays . It is also a honeymoon destination, has a long stretches of relaxing beaches and also offers boat rides and other water sports. The beach is a perfect getaway if you are looking to stay few days away from the city as this beach relatively less crowded. Holidays are all about chilling by the beach you drink, eat, sleep and relax all day long. The city offers a variety of places where they cater to all type of class and if you are on a budget but looking out for a good choice of stay ( this is a good option to look at. ) The best time to visit is end August to mid-October.

Hikkaduwa

Hikkaduwa -is located in the southern coast and is best known for its underwater pleasures and has the second best surfing spot in the country. Although its distance from Colombo is approximately 98 km away, we can always use the southern expressway depending on where you choose stay. The Hikkaduwa beach has some of the most luxurious hotels and nightclubs, attracting many tourists both foreign and local.

The coral sanctuary is situated hundred meters offshore from Hikkaduwa, a definite must-see if you are in town. You can either dive straight into it or hire glass bottom boat for viewing. The best time to visit is from March to September.

Galle

Galle is that city you visit either you are new to Sri Lanka or coming home to holiday in Sri Lanka, Galle offers the tourist old town charm, history and many landmarks including the Dutch Fort that has been named a protected UNESCO World Heritage site. The architectural beauty, tropical warm weather and aroma of spices are the few things we will always experience in Galle.  The best time to visit is September to March.

Unawatuna

Unawatuna is famous for its calm blue waters and beautiful view overlooking the bay of Unawatuna. You can try out water-sports, scuba diving and snorkelling. Unawatuna has a range of beach bars and restaurants with the best of local and international food for all of you foodies out there. The best time to visit is late August and end September.

Mirissa

If there was a competition among the beaches in the Southern coast, Mirissa beach would definitely take the prize for it. This beach ideal for swimming and is also known is for water-sports, surfing and it’s small but beautiful coral reef. The beach is a popular tourist destination and one of the island’s main whale and dolphin watching hotspots. If you visit in December you may also spot turtles hatching. The Mirissa beach has various class stays but my favourite is undoubtedly this beauty. The best time to visit is December to March or through August to October.
